Competitive Divisions - High Performance (HP) Programs
Spring / Summer
Mosquito - 10U / 11U A / AA / AAA
This is the first age group that offers High Performance (HP) baseball within BC Minor Baseball. It is also the most complicated. Larger organizations like COMBA tier their spring teams, similar to what you'll see at older age groups. However, if tiering occurs, unlike older age groups, those organizations are restricted to playing only within their own organization. So, with an organization of our size (and limited field availability), it is much harder for tiering.
Instead, WKMBA offers development nights (usually Sunday night), where players wishing to up their game can participate in higher level training. This is open to all players, regardless of skill level.
For all levels play, tryouts usually begin around May Long weekend. Depending on the age categories and skill levels, that is when we'll decide what level of competition we'll compete in for the summer. One of the biggest hurdles for forming our 2nd and 3rd teams is not finding players, but finding coaches and having them certified, as required by BC Minor Baseball. Please check our couching section for requirements.
AAA This is the highest level for this age category, but we don't put in teams at this level. Players can tryout at neighbouring associations for their teams which are usually in March. WKMBA must sign a tryout release before attending.
AA The season culminates with a Provincial qualifier about 3 weeks into July amongst local teams to go to Provincials the following weekend.
A / 10U Depending on numbers and talent, our 2nd team formed will either be a 10U team or an A team. The 10U division is super competitive, as there is no tiering. However, the benefit of forming a 10U team is to build strong bonds between players for future competition years.
Peewee - 13U A / AA / AAA
AAA is the first introduction to single-season interlock HP baseball throughout the Province with 4 games / weekend. Teams start at the beginning of April and play in league play until mid-to-end of July. Seedings for Provincials are based on interlock play throughout the season. As a smaller organization, WKMBA doesn't usually offer this level of play, but players can tryout at neighbouring associations for their teams which are usually in January or February. WKMBA must sign a tryout release before attending.
AA is a dual-season program. There is a Spring and Summer program, although they are typically the same players, unless we lose players to conflicts or injuries. Tryouts are in January / February at the Dome. Interlock play stays mainly within the Okanagan, although there is possible travel to Prince George or Cranbrook on alternating years. While it varies, it's typically 1 double-header each weekend. The season culminates with a Provincial qualifier about 3 weeks into July amongst local teams to go to Provincials the following weekend.
A is a Summer only program, similar to the 11U division. It's a good entry point for 1st-year 13U players or players that couldn't commit to HP in the Spring. Tryouts occur at the end of May or early June. Play begins mid-to-end of June. Games will remain within the Okanagan with play culminating at the end of July or early August with the Provincial qualifiers and then Provincials the following weekend. As Provincials are divided between East and West, there is a much higher chance of gaining entry at this division.
Bantam - 15U A / AA / AAA
AAA This level requires a high level of commitment. Tryouts often begin in the Fall with teams being formed in early January where training begins. League play starts at the beginning of April and requires travel throughout the province with each weekend consisting of double-headers on Saturday and Sunday. Every game matters as teams are seeded into standings to go to Provincials at the end of July. WKMBA does not offer this level of ball and players are welcome to tryout at neighbouring associations. A tryout release is required before attending.
AA This is very similar to AAA. The only difference is there is a slightly reduced number of games and travel stays mainly on the Eastern side of the province. Tryouts begin in January and the team will being training right away at the Dome, however attendance is not mandatory until we start going outside.
A This is a summer-only level. As many players continue playing multiple sports, this is a great opportunity to play at a higher level without the spring commitment. Tryouts begin at the end of May / early June with summer play beginning mid-to-end of June. Play continues until end of July / early August
Midget - 18U AA / AAA / College Prep
Unlike younger divisions, 18U has 3* years age difference in players. *This division also allows "overagers", so some age gaps can be as many as 4 years.
College Prep This is an optional program that organizations apply to have. Unlike the lower age divisions, this division is not mandatory based on organization size. As the name suggests, it's meant as a stepping stone for players wishing to play at the college level.
AAA This division is a stepping stone to College Prep. It's usually filled with 1st & 2nd year 18U players wishing to move up to College Prep. Commitment and level of play is similar to AAA in the younger divisions.
AA This is a more casual level of ball for those still wishing to play baseball at a semi-competitive level, but with much less commitment and more focus on fun.
